DESIGNER
BEHIND THE BRAND
Hey. My
name is Whitney Robinson and I am the designer of Soulista Threads. I started
crocheting at a women's fellowship group about 10 years ago. I've always been a
creative person and was excited to learn a new way to express that. The first
garment I ever crocheted was a scarf that was wide on one end and skinny on the
other. I loved it! I couldn't believe I made a garment I could actually wear.
That moment is where it all began. That moment is what led to Soulista Threads.
For many years I crocheted as a hobby. Most of
the things I made in the early years, I wouldn't even claim today. But it was
all for a purpose. To build on my craft, to understand my style, and to most
importantly realize my dream of becoming a designer. I wish I would have
realized this dream before I graduated college, but lets's not dwell. My first
fashion show was back at my alma mater, St. john's University, 2 years after I
graduated. That's when I started to take this designing thing seriously.
DESIGNER'S
STYLE DEFINED
I can
best describe my style in a list of statements:
·
Regal with Edgy, (Peplum blazers, puffy shoulders, low
backs, bell sleeves, high collars, etc.)
·
I love surprise details that add charm to a look. (Heart
shaped elbow patches, metallic seam stitch, mother of pearl buttons, etc.)
·
Muted colors and neons are my favorite. Nothing in between.
·
Statement pieces and embellishments
There are also times I lean towards a
structured androgynous appearance. I go Grace Jones on the world
sometimes. My style is pretty much subject to inspiration. I will say, I have
always been obsessed with texture and detail, that comes first before
my style falls into any style bracket.
WHAT'S IN YOUR FUTURE...
It's been nothing but blood, sweat, and tears
trying to get this business off the ground. And I'm not even close to where I
need to be. But, I love fashion, I love what I do and I feel blessed to be able
to do what I love. I plan to one day show my collection at Lincoln Center. I
can't wait for divas all over the world to be wrapped in my threads.
